Today's Canal - Grand Union

We moored close to Candle Bridge, on the outskirts of Blisworth village. Mike walked to the village shop where he has bought a paper several times before. Alas, when he reached he discovered that insufficient copies had been delivered today and so they had sold out!

On the way back, he noticed the Baptist Chapel which is mentioned on the village guide board.

Shortly after setting off we arrived at Blisworth Tunnel. It takes a good time to pass through but it is straight (we could see the other end from the outset, unlike Braunston Tunnel) and wide. We encountered only one boat coming the other way.

A few years ago the centre section had to be re-built after a roof collapse and so is in really good condition. Alongside the southern portal is a sample of the pre-cast concrete sections used in the re-build.

Most of the day was again very pleasant and without rain. At times it was very warm, cloud only arriving just before dusk.

Down through the first lock and we spotted a fuel boat which Christine hailed alongside. We needed to replace the gas bottle that ran out yesterday and took the opportunity to fill up our fuel tank. It was interesting to note that she treats her fuel for diesel bug in order to head off any claims that she has supplied tainted fuel!

A few locks further and we came to a halt as CRT staff were cleaning the bottom gates - almost the same place as we encountered the activity last year. We were warned to expect an hour's delay (it turned out to be 45 minutes). Mike had some urgent phone calls to make - he was called back only after we re-started down the flight leaving him to climb down a lock ladder with rope and phone in hand! However, the need to respond to several emails meant that the number of photos today is limited!

Solomon's Bridge

The ornate Solomon's Bridge announced our arrival into the village of Cosgrove. Above the lock we used the range of facilities. Whilst Mike was filling up the water tank, Christine popped to a nearby shop and successfully bought a paper - the shop belongs to the large caravan park by the canal and is only open until the end of the month when it closes for the winter.

The next pound is very straight as it crosses over the Iron Trunk Aqueduct - but we moored for the night a few metres short.

Whilst Mike made a start on the evening meal and replying to more emails, Christine took a closer look at the Iron Trunk. Last year Mike had the chance whilst Christine looked fater the boat!
