As Far As It Goes

Making what seemed like an early start (Andrew had already been to the shops to but a paper) we cast off from the quay side where we had moored overnight. alas, we quickly discovered that the arm was 'no exit' and the turning space was too tight for our length. Quarter of an hour later we had reversed back out into the main stream and were really off!

For the most part it was a dull, cold day but on occasion there were some warm, sunny spells and light showers, both of which were short-lived.

We were aiming to reach Bedford tonight and during the day Mike worked out a return schedule based on the latest tide times for next week from Salters Lode.

Rather against Andrew's judgement, we opted to call into Hartford Marina to empty the elsan - having earlier checked out by phone that it was possible. It was not as quick a stop as Mike had expected as the offices were the far side of a large lake! We also filled up with water - Andrew also discovered the reason why we have air locks when filling.

A little later we arrived at Huntingdon where we moored up for a quick dash to Sainsbury to re-stock the larders. In the end we were away within 45 minutes of arriving!

The obvious decision now was to have lunch 'on-the-go' so we took it in turns to steer whilst the others had food!

The last few locks were 'pointed' at both ends - no guillotine - but much longer rather than having the side extension.

By the time we passed through Great Barford - the last obvious mooring spot before Bedford - it was looking like a late arrival at our planned destination. However, at the next lock we spotted a Closure Notice for Marsh Mills lock. Unfortunately we did not see any possible river banks for mooring so when we reach the closed lock there was little choice but to moor on the lock landing and look at the repair works whilst the evening meal was finalised.
